David McKalip, M.D.

With more than twenty years experience, most of it centered in the Tampa Bay area, David McKalip, M.D., is a highly respected neurosurgeon who brings an understanding of many medical disciplines to his medical and surgical practice.

In addition to state-of-the-art experience, he brings his caring mind and heart to counsel his patients at the spine care center he founded and where he is the medical director.

A graduate of the University of South Florida (1987 B.S. in Biology, Cum Laude) Dr. McKalip then attended the University of South Florida’s College of Medicine, receiving his M.D. degree in 1991. After a general surgery internship at the University of South Florida, he trained in the neurosurgery residency at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill from 1992 to 1998.

He served as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Neurological Surgery at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF from 1998-2000). While at UCSF he was the Co-Director of Neurotrauma at San Francisco General Hospital where he was actively involved in clinical neurotrauma research.

Medical Practice

Returning to St. Petersburg, Florida, after his term as a university neurotrauma educator and co-medical director, he joined the neurosurgical practice of Casey Gaines, Jeffrey Walker, and Rosario Musella in September 2000. As a resident of St. Petersburg (with his wife and three children) he is an active member and leader in the community and has been appointed to the Clinical faculty of the University of South Florida Department of Neurological Surgery.

Dr. McKalip is the Immediate Past President of the Florida Neurosurgical Society. He served on the Board of the Florida Medical Association (FMA) and has served on the Florida Delegation to the AMA’s key policy making body, the House of Delegates.

For more than three years, he served as an officer of the Pinellas County Medical Association and has served on the Board for eight years.  He is currently the President of the Florida Chapter of the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons.
